BIO
: Sigmatropic
were created in Athens, in 1997, primarily as
Akis Bogiatzi’s solo music project which was
based on synthesizers and digital technology.
Their orientation today is a combination of the
aforementioned with an acoustic and electric
sound.
Their releases
are the expressive vehicle for the ideas of Akis
Bogiatzi’s who never neglects to express his
endless gratitude to his mentors, Captain
Beefheart, Brian Eno, Velvet Underground, Syd
Barrett, Peter Ubu and others. Their live
appearances are based on a group of musicians
who add elements of improvisation to their
recorded material.
Sigmatropic
comprise one of the most important chapters in
Greece’s alternative (but not only) music scene
of the last 10 years. Their work has been widely
recognized, both by critics and audiences,
rendering their presence in the record industry
even more prominent, while their concerts are
often the cause of lively discussions among
music buffs. Their releases instantly become
topics for presentation, interviews and endless
discussions.

Since the first
days of “Random Walk” (1998) until today,
Sigmatropic have been in a continuous burst of
creativity with a kind of music which is in the
forefront of international productions. Their CD
“Dekaeksi haiku kai alles istories (gr:Δεκαέξη
Χαϊκού και Άλλες Ιστορίες)”
(2002, their only album with Greek vocals to
date), which is comprised of music, moods and
songs based exclusively on George Seferi’s
poems, came as a surprise to many and earned
praise while it was voted the best CD in many
magazines and e-zines the year it was released;
in addition, in
www.mic.gr, it was
recognized as one of the ten best rock albums
with Greek vocals of all times! Even more
surprising was its follow-up, the international
version of “Sixteen haiku and other stories”
(2003) which hosts artists from the USA and the
UK who interpret the same songs adapting them to
English lyrics. This CD was given exceptional
reviews everywhere it was released. Track “Haiku
10”, in collaboration with Cat Power, ranked
high on the USA i-Tunes charts, while Robert
Wyatt’s participation in the opening piece was
admired by music lovers worldwide.
More recently,
their collaboration with Carla Torgerson (singer
of US band, Walkabouts) on her debut solo album,
entitled “Saint Stranger” was highly
praised and was released in October 2005 in
Greece and the rest of Europe. They recently
became a five-member group after Greek-American
singer Anna Karakalou joined the band.
This coming May they are going to
release a cd-single which will draw much
attention and prepare the ground for their
upcoming release “Dark Outside”, whose mixing
was done by Ian Caple, the British
producer and sound engineer best known for his
collaboration with Tindersticks, Tricky, Mansun,
and the legendary band of the 80’s, Shriekback.
Their CD will be released this coming September
(2007) in Greece by Hitch Hyke and in Britain by
Tonguemaster Records. |
