Sigmatropic

After a short pause in the mid 90’s, musician Akis Boyantzis, well known for his work with legendary local bands like Cpt Nefos and Libido Blume, formed Sigmatropic in 1997. “Random Walk”, the band’s first release a year later, was a strange mix of electroacoustic instruments and various loops.

In 2002, Sigmatropic released the Greek version of “Sixteen Haiku & Other Stories” which set 16 haikus written by Greek poet Georgios Seferis to the band’s music. The English version of the same album followed in 2003, with a list of guest appearances that would appeal to any lover of indie music and made “16 haikus…” one of the best local records of the decade. Here’s the list in one  breath: Robert Wyatt, Laetitia Sadler (Stereolab), Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion, Polaris), Alejandro Escovendo, Carla Torgesson (Walkabouts), Edith Frost, Mark Eitzel (American Music Club), Cat Power, Simon Joyner, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), John Grant (Czars), Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate, Gutterball)

After a few line up changes, Sigmatropic recorded  the track “Rocco’s Song” for Spinalonga’s “In The Junkyard vol. 3” compilation and released “Dark Outside”, their 3rd, in 2007, graced by the contribution of Howe Gelb, Carla Torgesson, Robert Fisher (Willard Grant Conspiracy) and James Sclavunos.

A few more members changes and the band plans its new, 4th release sometime in 2012.
